Antique Indian prayer amulet on African vinyl necklace
Antique sterling prayer box amulet from Rajasthan, India hangs on dark red old African vulcanite. The amulet is quite old, dating to perhaps, the early 1800s. The vinyl necklace it hangs on is finished off with two Thai Hill Tribe fine silver beads.
Old prayer box amulets historically hold prayers or poems within.
Though it is sterling, I've elected not to clean it up, to polish the amulet. One of the things I am especially happy to be leaving is the green oxidation, probably a result of some copper in the old solder. If you enlarge the second photo and look very carefully, you will see the green in three places.
The little bells hanging from the amulet sound very much like traditional Indian Ghungroo bells heard on classical Indian dancers' ankle bracelets. Because they are sterling, the sound is sweet.
A small, older (early 20th-Century) Rajasthani sterling, village goddess charm hangs at the nape of the neck.
SIZE: Sterling silver closure is adjustable allowing the necklace to be from 18 to 20 inches in length.
