At the turn of the century, it was quite common to hand paint black and white or sepia postcards since 4-color printing was too expensive. Here is a very good example of how the same postcard could look so different. Truly, color has a lot of power to evoke such different feelings. This is a very rare postcard by the photography studio of Reutlinger. This is not their usual style, but a delightful charming scenario all the same.The fair damsel has a kiss on her lips, but the love letter has been dropped and the bird is out of the cage. What story do you see unfolding here? I have both of these postcards (scans 1 and 2) in my collection. The other options have been created using 21st century photo editing techniques!
(Fun trivia fact: this scan was purchased by a set designer and will be used as a decorative poster in "The Summer of Wine," filmed in Spain and starring Gregory Peck's grandson, Ethan!)
