This is not a French postcard. It actually came to me from Belgium but is an English card. How could I resist this crow who is obviously one smart bird -- and he has good taste. Yes, if you look closely, you can see EPPS COCOA on the piece of paper sticking out between the books. Subliminal advertising? I don't know. But perhaps drinking all that rich dark cocoa is what turned this crow brown?:) I can't make out the titles of the books, but surely one of them is the works of Edgar Allen Poe?? Although my original postcard is not postally sent, the Epps Cocoa connection dates it to the turn of the century. Wiki says: "During the nineteenth century, Epps's cocoa was shipped all over the world. On the 23rd of June, 1887, the British ship Dunskeig, of Glasgow, was shipwrecked off Cape Horn. On August 16, the survivors of the Dunskeig's crew were joined by survivors from the abandoned British ship Colorado. The survivors from the two crews, twenty-five men in all, were stranded on the Isla de los Estados until the 20th of August with nothing to eat except a large quantity of Epps's cocoa, which had washed ashore." ....So, whether you use this digital scan at Halloween, add a pithy graduation quote, a verse from Poe, or alter in a dainty china cup of cocoa -- it's obvious that this crow is a bird for all seasons!
