Geekiana's Shop Policies
Welcome fellow geeks and friends of geeks!
I ship Monday through Friday using USPS Priority or First Class Mail. I do ship internationally, but please keep in mind tracking information is usually not available once the package leaves the United States. I may not be able to tell you anything about your international package once it leaves our hands! The USPS online system we use to buy postage has started asking us for phone numbers on some shipping orders: international customers, please include your phone number in the notes to seller. The USPS does not guarantee any tracking info will be available. Ever. Cause they said so.
If you celebrate Christmas and you want your item to arrive as a gift for that holiday, according to the US Postal Service, things would need to ship out on their schedule for arrival by December 25 (As noted at faq.usps.com)
As I note on the store page, hoodies can take 3-5 business days to complete, so you'll want to back your order deadline up as much as five days from the USPS dates (hoodie recommended dates are noted in parentheses)
Domestic: December 20th (Dec 14)
International: Canada, Caribbean, Middle East, Europe - Dec. 9 (2 Dec)
Africa, Central & South America- Dec. 2 (26 Nov)
Asia/Pacific Rim, Australia/New Zealand, Mexico - Dec. 9 (2 Dec)
APO / FPO / DPO AE (Iraq and Afghanistan) ZIP 093 - Dec. 3 (Nov 28)
APO / FPO / DPO AE (all others) ZIPs 090-092, 094-098, 340, 962-966 - Dec. 10 (Dec 5)
I haven't had a lot of transparency to the handling of stuff I ship once it leaves the US and gets handed off to whatever local mail organization deals with material on the other end. Policies in your nation are subject to change without notice to or from me: I don't make your laws and can't explain why you may or may not have to pay duties or taxes!
The UK Border Agency and Royal Mail appears to add some duties onto orders. They attach a label onto our packages that reads "Goods purchased & imported into the EU with a value over £18 (for VAT purposes, and over £135 (for import duty purposes), or goods imported from one private person to another private person as a gift with a value over £40, are subject to Customs charges. These reliefs do not extend to Excise goods e.g. tobacco products & alcohol. Queries about Customs charges are to be made in writing to the above address or by telephoning 0207 239 2449 quoting the above charge number and date. Retain outer wrappings & documents, they may help to resolve your enquiry.
Queries about contents or handling fees should be referred to Royal Mail International Tel: 08457 740 740. THIS PACKAGE CANNOT BE DELIVERED UNTIL THE CHARGES ARE PAID"
It appears the Royal Mail charges an "International Handling fee" of £8.00
I don't know how much the VAT is but it probably varies based on the value of the item. The label we use is a CN 22 Customs Declaration Form—it says
Contents: X merchandise and then a detailed description of the product with the value in $USD.
I don't know for sure, but based on the label from the Royal Mail, it looks like the ONLY way to not pay a UK VAT or handling fee is if it is a GIFT valued at less than £40 or if the package is worth less than £18 (At current exchanges, $37 = £23).
I don't know a lot about UK import law and I am NOT a lawyer. So this is NOT legal advice. According to Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs website (www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/post/buying.htm#4) we cannot legally mark items as a gift if you bought them and we are shipping them to you.
This is all stuff that's imposed by the UK's government, and I don't have a ton of experience with that for obvious reasons. The last time we made a big stink about your tax system was 240 years ago, and we haven't talked about it much since.
I called the Border Information Service (www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/trade-commerce/tariff-tarif/menu-eng.html) and asked about customs. For 100% confirmation on potential duties, you would want to walk down to your local post and ask.
Because our supplier is a US supplier the NAFTA agreement considers our goods to have been made in the US, so import duties won't apply. CBSA takes the value of a good, converts it to Canadian dollars and charges the following taxes: + 5% General Service Tax of Canada, + Provincial Sales Tax (varies by province from 0% in Alberta to 10.5% on Prince Edward Island) Then Canada Post adds an $8.50CAD handling fee.
You will likely pay at least $10 in taxes and handling fees imposed by Canadian agencies.
According to Australian Customs and Border Protection Services (http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page5653.asp#ImportingGoodsByInternationalMail) import of goods valued ≤ A$1000 are charged no duties when mailed to Australia. The good people at Australia Post suggest that the Customs & Border Protection policies are subject to change, so you may need to double check that website to know if the $1000-value duty free policy is still in place.
According to Australia Post (phone number: 13 7678, or internationally +61 3 8847 9045) you shouldn't have to pay additional delivery fees when the parcel(s) arrive.
Additional questions about Australian import policies can be found at http://www.customs.gov.au/site/importingGoodsByPostFaq.asp#WhocanIcallforgeneralinformationaboutimportinggoods
I will try to update my international shipping information as I get more information from other countries.
