Laelia - Sterling Silver Ring

Description

“Originally a teaspoon made in 1909 by Charles Wilkes, Birmingham, I was recently discovered by Milomade and lovingly re-crafted into this ring for someone special.”

A beautifully delicate ring made from a silver teaspoon with an orchid pattern design. The stem of the spoon is twisted and this twist forms the start of the stem of the orchid and it's leaves which curve around the ring and burst into bloom at the terminal end where the burnished flower is set against a speckled background. Laeliea - feminine form of Roman Laelius, possibly meaning lunar, this is the name of a beautiful orchid flower and a Roman myth name of one of the Vestal Virgins.

Sourcing, restoring and re-purposing antique silverware into unique delicate jewellery is something I really enjoy. I much prefer to use fine silverware as a starting point for my jewellery as this way I am recycling rather than using up the world's natural resources. There is a sense of history with each piece and I feel that as I am forming each ring, sanding and polishing it, I am capturing a memory or an essence of the past.
