Profile for Milomade
Welcome to the wonderful world of creative recycling...Milomade gives discarded, unwanted items a new lease of life. I am a maker following the good old fashioned principle of “make do and mend” but I bring this concept into the contemporary environmental and ethical context of “reduce, reuse and recycle”.
Through the process now commonly termed as 'upcycling' i.e. the practice of taking something unused/unwanted and transforming it into something of greater use and value, I design and manufacture contemporary jewellery, accessories and items from recycled materials.
Why throw away an old shirt or jumper when you can just as well put it to better use by re-purposing the fabric, wool, buttons and zips? These principles of re-using and recycling items were a prominent factor throughout my upbringing and I still apply them to my everyday life now. I also apply them to the jewellery and craft items I make and incorporate into these not only re-purposed items, but found objects as well.
My sewn items are all made out of vintage fabrics sourced from friends, relatives as well as freecyclers and charity shops. I use old leather jackets from my college days, unwanted leather from upholsterers, denim jeans and curtains too. Whereas the jewellery I make is fashioned mostly made from vintage buttons, safety pins, beads as well as recycled silver in the form of silver cutlery and flatware. I also use sterling silver, but I try to keep this use to a minimum and use recycled silver wherever possible. My paper goods are made by recycling cereal boxes, envelopes, magazines, maps, sheet music and student sketchbook paper(blank).
