Vintage Victorian style baby nightgown or christening gown
Description
The detail stitching on this little gown is just wonderful. I have described it as "Victorian style" (and priced accordingly) because I don't know the exact age, but the drawstring ties at the back of the neck leads me to believe it is very old, Health and Safety wouldn't allow us to use that fastening today!
It is cotton, a good white but with a few little rust marks from age.
At least some of the stitching is machine, not handsewn - but sewing machines have been mass produced since 1850.
The broderie anglaise trims to the cuffs and collar are attached with a whitework feather or herringbone stitch, as has the self-fabric belt.
The detail that I particularly like is the tuck that has been taken in each sleeve, to allow for growth.
I have washed and ironed the gown since it was very musty when I discovered it in a local auction house - and actually, ironing all those tiny gathers and lace edgings also makes me think it is old and wish we still had laundry maids!
Measurements:
neck to hem 25" 64cm
chest (underarms) 22" 56 cm
sleeves (from underarm) 6" 16cm (but letting down the tucks would give another inch)
Please ask me if you would like more photos or measuremnts.
