Old Blood earrings: brecciated jasper drops with white glass pearls
Description
'Old blood': a noble family with a long history? Or dark, semi-congealed bodily fluid that is no longer fresh and scarlet?
Or both?
You choose.
Brecciated jasper drops are wire-wrapped, and dangle from elegantly arched, gunmetal-black ear wires. Above each semiprecious stone drop, adorning the ear wire, is a white glass pearl framed by glossy, gunmetal-black, ridged bead-caps.
The polished jasper beads have the colours of darkened, half-dried blood: dark crimson, brick red, and charcoal. They are flattened ovals in shape.
The glass pearls have slight imperfections in their surfaces, giving them a vintage feel, which adds to the 'old', distinguished ambience of the earrings.
The 'Old Blood' earrings are perfect for an occasion whereupon you have to be a classy and bit subtle but you still want to feel gothic.
Jasper is a semiprecious stone; a form of chalcedony. The name 'jasper' means 'spotted or speckled stone'. Jasper was a favourite gem in the ancient world; its name can be traced back in Hebrew, Assyrian, Persian, Greek and Latin. It comes in an extraordinary variety of colours and patterns.
'Brecciated' comes from the Italian word 'breccia', which means 'a breach'. Brecciated stone is stone that has been formed from broken fragments of other stones, and is held together by a fine-grained matrix. This gives it a marbled look and fascinating patterning.
Because all semiprecious stones are different, the stones in your earrings may be slightly different from the ones shown. The markings will vary from stone to stone, and from front to back of the stone (see the photographs). There may be the occasional splash of brighter blood-red, but all of the stone beads have the same basic colouring.
The earrings measure 53mm from top to bottom. The jasper drops are 21mm long, including the wire-wrapping, and 12.5mm across. The kidney-shaped ear wires have a wonderfully smooth finish, and are without nickel, so most sensitive ears should be fine wearing these.
The glass pearls and the bead caps have been simply slid onto the ear wires, so it is recommended that you keep the ear wires closed so that the beads do not slip off and get lost. Keeping the earrings hanging, rather than jumbled up in a jewellery box, will help to ensure that the ear wires do not get opened or bent by other jewellery pieces pushing against them.
