These bees are having a party on a Matilija Poppy flower. At one point there were four bees on this one flower alone. I wonder if this is the bee equivalent to a human quilting bee. Hanging out with friends while working does make it more fun.


Unlike most domestic poppies I see, the Matilija Poppy is an extremely tall plant. They can get up to 8 feet tall! The flowers are the largest of any native California plant. Some compare the flower to a fried egg, but I think it looks more like a crumpled tissue - although I don't want to carry the comparison to the center of the flower.
