1954 O Promise Me, Illustrated Book of Wedding Photographs from 1850 to 1950
Description
Book Title: O Promise Me
Author: R & L Freeman
Copyright: 1954
This little book contains only 112 pages, but provides so much interesting information regarding weddings through the decades, beginning in 1850. I was instantly fascinated with the numerous images of brides, grooms, their wedding parties, and the activities that were part and parcel of the weddings of their times. I knew as soon as I saw it, that this vintage book would be the perfect addition to “The Way We Were" Section of Veejay's Vintage!
This “album” of wedding photographs traces the changes in the manners, styles, and traditions related to weddings over the years. Largely through the use of informal, candid photos, the authors attempt to answer questions regarding this most important of days. As they state in the introduction, they attempt to address: “What was worn – and sung? What was done and why? No labored historical treatment.... Such would defeat our primary purpose of making the past become glowingly alive.”
The marble-look hardcover features a bride and groom in the lower right hand corner and is in overall good condition. The lettering on the spine is faded and there is a bumped lower corner on the back of the book. The inside pages are in good condition as well. All pages are firmly attached; there are no tears, notes, or dog ears noted. My sense of smell is almost nonexistent, but I have been told there is a “very light” musty smell to this book. Since I am unable to verify this personally, I would not recommend this book to anyone who has allergies or is otherwise sensitive to smells.
One of my favorite things about this amazing little volume is the lovely inscription in red ink on the flyleaf that begins with the word “love” inscribed within a heart. It reads as follows (names will not be mentioned here for privacy reasons): “Love to.... on our lacey 13th, finally a gift suitable to the occasion, much love as we embark on the frolicksome fourteenth year...”
“Oh Promise Me” features a short one page textual overview of each decade, but the majority of its pages are devoted to numerous black and white reproductions of photographs. This album, with it's many captioned illustrations would be a welcome addition to the library of any modern day wedding planner or photographer.
