Profile for WildfirePottery
Hello and thanks for visiting my shop. My name is Sarah Beck and I love clay. It has always been a part of my life as my mother is also a potter. I started making little creatures in her studio when I was just a baby (35 years ago) and now for the last 8 years it has been my full-time profession. I have my own studio and shop, Wildfire Pottery where I still make creatures. It is located on the Cabot Trail, a popular tourist route on Cape Breton Island, in Nova Scotia, Canada. My shop is open from May to October and during the winter I make stock for the busy summer season and now for Zibbet too! I have always been interested in the natural world and in animals in particular and this is pretty apparent in my work. I hand-build almost everything I make and I don't use any moulds. I do actually have a wheel, I just never seem to get around to using it! Most of my pottery is raku fired, a dramatic technique involving red hot pots, flames and smoke which creates very individual pieces. I also do some functional stoneware pieces, decorated with a nature theme of course.
I also like to play my fiddle (Cape Breton has its own thriving celtic fiddle culture),snowshoe along the ocean with my friends and our dogs and drive my smart car convertible (but not so much in the winter.)
