Learn How-to Tag for Success

A ‘tag’ is a keyword or term assigned to help ‘describe’ your item and allows it to be found when users browse or search Zibbet. When you list a new item on Zibbet, you are able to enter up to 15 different ‘tags’.The order you list your tags in doesn’t matter.

Do your best to use ALL 15 tags! This is extremely important. The more tags you use, the more your item will show up in peoples related search results. For example: If you list a beautiful painting of your cat playing with a ball of wool, and you don’t ‘tag’ it with the keyword ‘cat’, your painting won’t show up in any search results where the browser has used the keyword ‘cat’ in their search. You have potentially lost a sale because you didn’t ‘tag’ your item properly.

How do I ‘tag’ my items?

You must first select which ‘category’ your item fits into.

Once you have chosen your category, a list of ’suggestions’ will appear in the left box.  Go through the suggestions and select which ones relate to your item.  Add them to your tags by clicking on them and then clicking on the top green arrow pointing to the right.  These ’suggestions’ also double as our ’sub-categories’, therefore the tags selected here will determine which sub-categories your item is shown in.  Choosing terms that don’t relate to your item is considered ’sit abuse’ and can result in account restrictions.

In the field labeled ‘other tags/keywords’ you can enter any other tags you feel are relevant.  It’s also important that you choose the ‘main colors’ of your item to cater for those buyers searching by color.  Simply click the color chip and it will elevate.

Some Tagging Ideas?

Start by looking at your item and listing all the obvious keywords. If you get stuck, these questions may provoke some ideas…(not all questions will relate to your item)

- What is it?

- What is the subject?

- How would you describe it? (Remember to use single keywords, unless it is a phrase. E.g. You CAN use ‘lady bug’ as your tag, as tagging these separately would mean a totally different thing)

- What is the genre?

- What are the main colors? (Don’t waste your tags by mentioning all the colors, just the main ones)

-Who is it for?

- What are the main materials used?

- What method or techniques were used to create your item?

- What style is it?

- What size is it?

- Are there any synonyms that can be used?

If you are still stuck, try Google’s Keyword Tool. This will help you generate descriptive words or phrases that you may be able to use.You can also try Thesaurus.com, which is another great place to get new ideas from. Simply do a search on one of your existing keywords to get a list of similar words.

Lastly, make sure you use correct tagging. For example, don’t use the tag ‘necklace’, when in fact your item is a ‘ring’.This will not only make your item show up in the ‘wrong’ search results and annoy users, but you could have been a lot more effective by including ‘correct’ tags. If you see any sellers using inappropriate tagging, please report it to abuse@zibbet.com.

this is one of the best blogs that I’ve read! I really should use all of my tags. thanks for the reminder as I’m new:)

  2. rockpointpro

This is a great feature, could we have more than 18 entries?? I know, but sometimes there is so much to say about a piece. Thanks all.

  3. Jonathan

The reason we have only allowed 15 tags is to prevent incorrect tagging, also known as ‘Tag Abuse’. Unfortunately we have to put these parameters in place. :)

I think 15 tags is enough for anyone. Any more and it would get too big. If you want to say a lot about a work you can write a huge amount in the description. Tags are just tags and connections that get the customer to our paintings. Sorry Rockpointpro, but I think you are trying to use tags for the wrong reason ie as a substitute for good descriptive prose that promotes the buyers curiosity. If you think I’m being unfair then put me right and shoot me down. I try to use all 15 tags and find 15 quite sufficient. My problem is that they don’t always work. For me the word Mexico works well, but others like dancer, Aztec, Mayan and Toltec don’t seem to register at all. Does anyone else have this problem?

I think 15 tags is a good Number..
I put color, item, object, what it’s made of, what the picture is.

Thanks Crowhurst, you have a point, as does Jonathan, I guess one should think carefully before using tags, jot things down on paper and choose the most vital options.

    Thanks again.

hi there to all! I think that making the right and correct tags is very important but not so hard as it may seem.. Following some essential steps like the ones you can find here on this blog you can be sure about the right description for your artwork. The problem is that you should not tag thinking about selling but just describing your work simple as possible..using simple words and concepts is essential in tagging..you should just choose what to tag about your artwork.. If you think that the concept, idea or the meaning are more important than materials and technique then choose to tag your piece in that sense..i mean that you should have a clear idea about the nature of what your tagging and then do it in the simpler way that is possible..and tags will work greatly.. :-)

The site is getting ever bigger as is proved by the 4 new categories. This means that it is ever harder for the customer to find what they want. Everyone has their own preferences and they want to find them easily and quickly. If they don’t and can’t they will simply exit the site and may never return.
Often I put tags like Al Capone into the search engine and nothing comes up although I know I have just seen his portrait in the showroom.
I test to see if my own paintings will show up. Often they don’t because I selected the plural tag ‘CARTOONS’, but I had tagged my work with the singular ‘CARTOON’. So tags have to be very precise and checked for effeciveness. In this way we an ensure the fast, user-friendly effectiveness of Zibbet and so help Zibbet and each other.
ps I hope you can enjoy my cartoons.

Do the words in the title show up in the search?

  10. jonathan

ValentinePhotography…No they don’t. Our ‘keyword search’ only searches through item ‘tags’. Therefore, if you want your shop name or item title to appear in search results when people search using keywords, you need to tag each of your items with this.

Is there a way to put an item into more than one category. Among other things I make doll clothes. They could be listed int the category children and then toys or they could be listed under Dolls. Is there a way to list them in both categories? I understand I can tag them as doll under children’s toys, but I can also tag them as children’s toys under dolls.

  12. jonathan

@FinelyFabricated: Yes! You can simply click ‘add section’ when listing your item and you can add your item to as many different sections as you wish. :)

  13. littlesev

Thank you for this wonderful information! I really like the ease of adding tags in this site, along with other benefits. I’m truly going to give my shop here a try :)

  14. sewcollection

thanks for your advice. i will try it. thanks

  15. mybrownwren

It’s nice to know that we can add our items to multiple sections. This has been very helpful!

  16. milesoftextiles

    I’m a new “Zibbet-er.” Very helpful tips.

  17. ariamy

Tagging has always been a nightmare for me but I think it’s something you get right eventually. This article helps a lot.

  18. NiftyKnits

I was staggered when I saw the lists of previously used tags to select from - what a time-saver! thank you.

  19. tjscorner

What I’m noticing is that if I have “necklace” and “pearls” in two different tags, my item doesn’t show up if someone searches “pearl necklace.” Is that correct?

  20. NettieGzDesigns

I have a little problem as none of the keywords/tags I use to describe my wedding/bridal veils are listed - most everything is listed except for “women” “bridal veils” or just “veils” under weddings. If it is, I must be looking in the wrong category first.

I’m not really complaining because I just type mine in the blank.

    Thanks,
    Nettie

  21. RoyalMetals

Do tags need to be exact? In other words, if I type sterling silver ear wires and someone searches sterling ear wires will my tag work? Also, is it better to have a comma between each word? Thanks!
