Tag! You’re it!

Last week I discussed the importance of careful tagging and provided a list of seven basic tagging concepts. This week, I’m expanding that list with seven more tips on creating useful tags for your Zibbet item listings.

Include your shop ID as a tag along with the expanded version of your shop name. For example, “myshopid” and “My Shop Name.” Why? At the moment, the Zibbeter search is not working properly. Including your shop name as an item tag will make it easier for a shopper to find your items specifically.

Use alternate spellings. Potential buyers can be from anywhere in the world and spelling varies from place to place. For example, in the US we use “jewelry.” However, in many English speaking countries, “jewellery” is the correct spelling.

If you have tags available, consider including common misspellings of your most important tags. “Jewlry” is a common misspelling for “jewelry.”

Include both singular and plural forms of some of your tags. For a pearl necklace include both “pearl” and “pearls.” Note that at the time of this writing, the Zibbet search is very sensitive and returns only exact matches. Once the search has been updated, this tagging strategy will become less important.

To make tagging more efficient, prepare and save a text document that contains several sets of tags that you use frequently, making it quick and easy to copy and paste. Tags such as your shop ID and shop name, and other terms that apply to most, if not all of your items should be included.

Because the tag box is not large enough to see all fifteen tags at once, use a text document to create your list and then simply copy and paste your tags into the box in the listing window.

Words that you enter as tags which are already on Zibbet’s category list will automatically be entered into the larger box above the Tags box when you save the listing. Please note that those tags count as part of your fifteen total tags. However, the Category that you select does not count as a tag.

As a Zibbet seller, I’m always looking for ways to improve my shops and share what I’ve learned with you. I hope you’ll take some time to carefully examine your existing tags because in The Zibbet Tag Game, “Tag! You’re it!”

Best wishes for much success on Zibbet!

Very nice article Vicki! Thanks for all the time you put into this.

Portable Graffiti, I am sure, has many incorrect tags. That is because I use “copy a listing” and often forget to edit the tags.

So if anyone searches for a monkey button and comes up with a teddy bear button, give me a holler and let know okay? Thanks.

With 1,555 buttons listed, it would be quite time consuming to go in and check them all.

Maybe if the tag box was VERY BIG and I could see all the words at once I might get better at editing the tags before I hit “list.”

Great points,Vicki. I just started using singular and plurals of words like button or buttons. Anything that will help.

The Technical Dept has advised me this is on their “to-do” list. When inputting tags it will be very helpful to have each tag numbered so we instantly know how many tags have already been input. Often I’ve put in more than the allotted 15, which triggers an error message, and then have to go back and edit tags I’ve input, deciding which ones to take out. Its time-consuming and could be alleviated by simply have each tag numbered. Anyone else like to see this change?

Counting tags is tedious right now. I know this sounds crazy, but I’m actually glad to get the error message because I know without counting how many tags I have and how many I need to delete to make sure that I use all 15 tags!

A “work around” suggestion for counting tags is to create your tag list in a word processing program that has an auto numbering feature.

    1. Turn numbering on. Type your first tag followed by a comma and then press Enter.

    2. Continue until you have the number of tags you need.

    3. Select (highlight) your list and turn numbering off.

    4. Here’s the tricky part: YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE ENTER CHARACTER (they’re normally invisible) after each comma to put your tags in a continues list separated by commas.

    5. Select, copy and then paste your list into the appropriate space in the listing page.

Removing the Enter characters is the only “catch” to this. If you don’t remove them, only the first tag in your list will be pasted into the tag box.

Thanks for the great tips. I had not thought about the use of my shop name as a tag until now. I’ll give it a try.
