Design and Style with Papernstitch: Chalkboard Decor

Years ago chalkboards were rarely used for anything more than a fun prop in a child’s bedroom. Ah, how times have changed.
Now chalkboards are a huge trend in home decor. It’s a great way to introduce some creativity and playfulness into a space and is super versatile as well. Framed chalkboards, like this one, can be used for anything from spicing up a tired space to replacing artwork above the mantle. And if you are feeling a bit more bold, grab a bucket of chalkboard paint and go to town…cover a half wall for writing little notes and grocery lists or paint an entire wall and create your own erasable mural. Here are a few of my favorite examples of this trend…

A small scale chalkboard wall.

Framed and unframed chalkboards are a great backdrop for any room. Like these two examples above (one and two) and the one below.

Or paint a small chalkboard nook in your kitchen or dining room for jotting down recipes and quick reminders.

What is your favorite decor trend right now?

This is a great idea. I’ve seen it used on HGTV several times. If only I had known about chalkboard paint when my boys were little–could have saved some walls from “crayon art” LOL! Now, if I just had a grandchild I’d paint a wall with chalkboard paint…

I have an antique blackboard from an old schoolhouse. It’s BIG and HEAVY. It is a thick slab of real slate. I have hauled around for years. In this house I never got it hung up. It sits in my hallway leaning against the wall. It has had some great artwork on it over the years, some drawn by guests and much drawn by the kids. Kelly still uses it. Blackboards are great!
