Sahmain or Summer's End is now widely celebrated as Halloween. It was a harvest festival and many cultures have an ancient custom for celebrating this time, honouring ancestors with gifts at altars and lighting fires for those departed to find their way home, when the veil of this life and afterlife is seemingly the thinnest.
In this painting, the cat wanted to explore the Mexican 'Dias de los Muertos' and European pagan festivities, choosing the Catrina and the marigolds and the apple and the oak leaf to merge the two into a fun interpretation of this wonderful time of year.
The quotation on the card 'Hay mas tiempo que vida' translates as 'There is more time than life'
