Profile for maryellengolden

Mary Ellen Golden

I am a native of Rose Hill, North Carolina, now living in Wilmington, North Carolina. I began painting in oils and worked in acrylics before discovering the excitement of the watercolor medium.

The beauty in the natural world around us is my favorite subject. We experience all sorts of beauty in flowers—color, shape, fragrance, the associations and memories which come crowding in. This seeing and feeling experience is the most important part of being an artist.

Living here on the coast of North Carolina, I enjoy the ever changing panorama of the ocean. I've painted waves in watercolor since my first student said, "Next week, Mary Ellen, we're going to paint waves". So I had to learn how! The watercolor medium lends itself beautifully to capturing water in motion.

In 1977, I moved from Charleston, South Carolina, to Wilmington and opened a studio gallery in The Cotton Exchange. I teach classes in watercolor technique and have co-authored an instructional video/DVD entitled “Watercolor Can Be Easy.”

I am a member of the Wilmington Art Association and the Watercolor Society of North Carolina. My work appears in many corporate collections—General Electric, Kosa, Boddie-Noell, Bank of America, Japan Nuclear Fuel, IBM, First Citizens Bank, BB&T, Archer Daniels Midland, First Union National Bank, Interstate Securities, DuPont, Takeda Chemical, Corning, Charlotte Pipe and Foundry, A. G. Edwards, Siemens-Allis, Murphy Farms, and Cooperative Bank—and may be found in private collections throughout the world.
