Raku Pottery Clay Starfish (Large)

by WildfirePottery

This listing is for ONE raku starfish, you may not receive one of the ones in the pictures but it will be similar. They are approximately 6” from tip to tip and about 1” high. They vary slightly depending on how much I curl them up. The colours range from dark green to blue to copper and no two are alike. There are two basic shapes, one with skinnier arms and one with fatter arms. If you have a specific shape you want just let me know and I’ll see what I have, otherwise, let me surprise you.

These starfish are handmade by me, Sarah Beck, in my studio on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada.

To make the starfish I roll out a slab of clay, cut out the starfish shape and then add the markings onto each one using mostly handmade tools. You’d be amazed at what you can do with a bunch of bamboo skewers or a knob from an old drawer. Some of them have radial lines that are made using a sewing tracing wheel. Very high-tech! I then push from the back of the piece creating the 3D shape. You can see the marks of my fingernails on the back of some of them. Each starfish is also different because of the raku glaze firing process (see below). They look good on their own, or in a grouping. One of my customers put them in a glass topped coffee table filled with sand and driftwood and created a unique conversation piece for her living room. Each one has a hanger on the back so you can hang it on the wall if you prefer. (In the last picture the lower starfish is backwards so you can see the hanger).

My raku pieces are bisque fired once to make them hard, then glazed and fired again in an outdoor kiln. When the pieces are red hot I pull them out of the kiln with tongs allowing the glazes to crackle while cooling for a very short time in the air or on the ground. I then put them in a metal container filled with newspaper which bursts into flames, blackening all the areas I haven't glazed with smoke and filling in the crackle lines. Every piece is different some have more crackle, some less, but all are unique. See the making of one of my pieces from start to finish by pasting this link into your browser window:
