Filling out your social profiles completely and having a professional looking Facebook Fan page will let your customers know you are serious about your creative business. Your profiles are there to let your fans and customers know more about you and your creative business. They are looking for you on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other social media sites.

With Facebook being the most popular site I am going to give you a few pointers for filling out your Facebook fan page. We talked about branding in a previous post. Here is just a little reminder:

Make sure you are adding your website link in your about section of your fan page. Facebook has now allows us to remove the http from the link, making it look nicer. Also make sure you are filling out more info, so when your fans or potential fans click through they can learn more about your business.

You Don’t Have to be Everywhere

You know social media sites can be a huge time-waster, but somehow you just can’t pull yourself away from that Facebook game that has your attention, or the beautiful photos of yummy desserts you want to make.

Even worse, when you are running creative business, it’s far too easy to justify time spent on social media as being “work.”

Here is the bottom line. Running a creative business takes time. From creating your product, photographing & listing your items in your shop, and finally shipping the products you have sold, your time is precious and limited.

Luckily, social media marketing does not mean you have to be everywhere all the time. It is more about picking the social media sites that are right for your business and sticking with them. Limiting yourself to 1-3 sites will help you grow your social network faster. Don’t spread yourself too thin.

I suggest if you are just starting out you need to be properly utilizing the 3 top social media site. In this order: Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter.

Don’t forget that neglecting your social media presence can hurt your creative business. Don’t sign up for that new site if you don’t have time to manage and engage with your followers and potential customers.

Social media is a great way to stay in touch with far-flung family and friends, and yes, it’s an important business-building tool as well. So rather than try to eliminate it all together cause it is sucking to much time from your day, why not make it a regular, scheduled part of your day?

For example, catch up on your Facebook feed over coffee, then log out and get to work. Or browse Pinterest while you eat lunch. For actual work-related social media tasks, schedule a time during the work day to log in, update your status, respond to questions, and check up on your competitors. The key here is to actually schedule this as you would any other business-related task, and not to let this “work time” turn into a chat with Aunt Sally about Thanksgiving Day plans.

This is Not All About You: Too Much Self-Promotion

The quickest way to lose fans and followers is to constantly push your products on them. Just broadcasting about your business and products will just become annoying white noise to your followers and they will eventually get fed up and leave. The business that succeeds on social media sites posts on a variety of topics that can inform and engage their fans. Create value for your fans that will keep them coming back to your fan pages and profiles for more.

Let your fans know that you are an expert in your niche. If you are a knitter, post articles about knitting that you have found around the web. Your fans probably enjoy knitting, so teach them more about your niche.

Here are a few ideas to think about when posting on your social media sites:

  • Tested and Loved: Customer testimonials feedback
  • Reward your readers: Let your fans and readers know about giveaways you are running or even ones that you have found around the web that they would be interested in.
  • Teach them: Tutorials and How-to’s

  • A peek behind the scenes: Give your fans a look behind the scenes of your business.
  • Always use captivating images
  • Go back in time: Show your fans a blast from the past and let them see how far your products have come since you started.
  • Reader Contribution: Let your fans guest post, or post articles from other blogs, sites or fan pages.

Lack of Consistency

The key to long-term social media success is being consistent. The lack of a well-laid out, consistent posting schedule on social media sites can leave your fans looking for more and even wondering why you are leaving them hanging. Google also loves consistency. Google is paying attention to fan pages that are consistent in their updates.

Things to consider for your social media marketing schedule/plan:

  • Do you have a marketing plan or strategy in place or are you just posting away on Facebook and Twitter just hoping that someone is listening?
  • Do you have goals set for each day, week, month, or even the year?
  • Who is my target market?
  • When should I be posting on social media sites?
  • I am posting enough variety… a good mix between promoting, informing, and engaging content?
  • What will keep my fans coming back?
  • Do my fans see me as an authority in my niche?
