Large Fancy Scrappy Suncatcher - Amber Geode
I am a huge fan of "amber cathedral" glasses - those pieces of glass that come in so many wonderful, subtle shades of color that range from the most pale honey golds, all the way to the richly saturated appearance of the darkest root beer (or a hearty Guiness Stout!)
This suncatcher features stained glass scraps from Spectrum, Kokomo, Wissmach, a couple of examples of "architectural clears", a piece of reclaimed vintage bronze-colored glass of unknown origin, and even a piece of vintage "lozenge glass" salvaged from some 1970's kitchen cabinets! The focal piece of this Scrappy Suncatcher is an extra-special genuine Agate Geode slice in a similar palette of amber and golds. Starting with that piece, I added scraps and nuggets and other fun bits until the emerging freeform suncatcher let me know that it was "done". After that, it was a matter of going back and filling and smoothing the solder until everything was nicely finished. For the accent, I soldered a single large dragonfly brass stamping at the edge of the geode slice, where it looks to have alighed briefly, resting from its flight. After the application of some dark "antique look" patina this beautiful suncatcher was ready to go!
