FULL SET French Scallop/ Oyster/ Clam Serving Platter and TWELVE Plates. Dove Grey and White Glaze Shell Design. 'Moulin des Loups' Mark.
If you enjoy Seafood then these are a 'must' for serving and tasting Seafood. An exquisite gift for a Seafood Chef or an excellent Housewarming present for those living near the sea. They are Collectors pieces, now very sought after and hard to find, especially in large sets.
Dating from the 1970's these plates have been 'spray' glazed individually, so each one varies slightly from the others in colour and intensity. Some are more 'grey' then others, whose colours verge on 'blue/grey'. Wonderfully tactile with 'ridges' reminiscent of scallop shells there cannot be a more stylish way to serve your seafood course at dinner parties.
Originally designed for serving 'Coquilles St. Jacques', (Scallops) the twelve plates all have six 'shell-shaped' depressions around a 'Lemon Well' in the centre, where you stylishly serve your Lemon ready for squeezing onto the Seafood. There is also a Larger Matching Platter with Twelve 'Scallop Wells' and Two 'Lemon Wells' for a Table Centrepiece, where extra Coquilles St. Jacques can be presented. They could also be used for Oysters.
The twelve smaller plates each weigh 600gms (1.3 lbs) and measure 25cms/ 9 ¾" diameter.
The Larger Platter weighs 1kg (2.2 lbs) and measures 33cms/ 13" diameter.
Marked MOULIN DES LOUPS 'ORCHIES' DECOR INALTERABL France (Mill of wolves in English)
Here's a bit of History for you about the MOULIN DES LOUP Porcelain mark: In 1904, Orchies’ ceramic production became more artistic under the name of L'Herminé et Cie. In 1923 the Orchies and Hamage factories merged and became Moulin des Loups & Hamage. The new company's mark generally comprises a windmill and the name ORCHIES in capitals (as shown on the bottom of these plates). Production was at its peak between 1920 and 1970.
There are just two tiny, tiny 'nicks' on the lips of two of the plates, these are not noticeable at normal viewing distance. The Platter and ten other plates are in pristine, perfect condition.
One of the plates has a 'scratch' line that was 'pre-final glazing' and is therefore part of the glaze and present at manufacture not damage. Considering the age and uniqueness of this set it does not in any way detract from the beauty or quality of this service.
This set really is a rare 'find' indeed and simply beautiful..............
